Mike left school at 16 with no qualifications before moving to London in the 1970s where he worked in local authority care homes for children and the elderly.
He returned to education, as a mature student in the 1980s, studying Politics and Sociology at Coleg Harlech before moving on to gain a first class BA in Urban Studies at Sussex University. He has also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Housing at Bristol University/Polytechnic and has been a volunteer, manager, worker and management board member for a range of housing, homelessness and other voluntary organisations.
In 2000 he returned to education again, through involvement in voluntary sector trade unions, completing a certificate and MA in Industrial Relations, by distance learning, before undertaking a PhD and studentship in Industrial Relations at Keele University. He has taught across the Keele HRM and Industrial Relations undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and is nearing completion of the PhD which has involved research in a range of voluntary welfare organisations looking at public service reform, the changing role of not-for-profit and voluntary organisations and the implications for employee relations. He is interested in the broader development and role of not-for-profit and voluntary organisations.
He took up his post at Lampeter in September 2007, has a family and enjoys walking and listening to music, especially folk and jazz.
He is responsible for the delivery and development of courses, programmes and research at VSS.
