What is the Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers course?

Not just for Volunteers, The Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers (CIPSV) will help to develop your academic skills and knowledge and encourage you to draw on the skills, experience and knowledge developed through voluntary or paid work.  As well as being a stand-alone course, the CIPSV is a compulsory (core) course in our BA Degree in Voluntary Sector Studies.

What are Interpersonal Skills?


Can I do it?

Yes!  If you are at least 18 years old and have an interest in the voluntary or not-for-profit sector and want to improve your interpersonal skills.  You will need to be able to commit 5+ hours a week to study, more if you include thinking time.


How long does the Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers course take?

On average the course takes 30 weeks, on a part-time basis.  The course is flexible and designed to fit into already busy lifestyles. You will need to commit time for thinking, reading, preparing assignments and talking to your tutor.


How is the course taught?

By part-time distance learning, supported by teaching comments and feedback on your coursework.


What support is provided?

You will be allocated a Tutor to help with your course and study-related queries.  You can contact your Tutor by phone or email; details will be given with your course material.  If you have additional needs related to a specific disability, please contact us to discuss how we can accommodate your requirements.


What material is provided?  Will I have to buy books?

We provide all the necessary course materials.  You don't have to buy any books.  We will send you our comprehensive course materials once your enrolment has been successful, you will also have access to your course materials online.


How is the course assessed?  Is there an exam?

There are eight assessed pieces of coursework.  Coursework is due at 5 to 6 week intervals.  There are no exams.


How do I enroll for the course?  When does it start?

Apply online or complete and return the application form.  We have monthly start dates, so you'll be able to start soon!

Do I need any formal qualifications to apply for the course?

No.  The course is designed to draw on your interest/experience in the voluntary sector.


Can I count the Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers towards a Higher Education qualification?

Yes! The Certificate in Interpersonal Skills for Volunteers is worth 40 credits at University Level 1 and can be put towards a Certificate of Higher Education (120 credits at University Level 1), Diploma of Higher Education (total of 240 credits at University Levels 1 and 2) or the BA Degree in Voluntary Sector Studies (total of 360 credits at levels 1, 2 and 3).

Are courses accredited?

All our courses are fully accredited by the University of Wales, Lampeter – the oldest degree-awarding university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge.


How many University credits can I take in a year?

All our courses are run as part-time distance learning.  Students usually take 60 credits within an academic year, though it’s possible to complete a maximum of 80 credits.  This means that you can complete a degree in 4½ to 6 years. The maximum time you are allowed to complete an undergraduate degree is 10 years.


Can I use the Internet to access my course/s on line?

Yes, registered students are supplied with a username and password giving them full access to our Virtual University.  There you have access to student forums and a chat room, as well as your course materials.


What help is there for my specific disability need?

How do I contact my Tutor?

Can I transfer other qualifications/credit transfer?

You can ask for an assessment of credit transfer for relevant academic qualifications.  Please contact us for details.
