This course is particularly relevant for volunteer managers and co-ordinators
and for those aiming for such a role.
Within the voluntary sector, the professional status of a volunteer manager has changed considerably over the last five years, particularly in light of the changing and increasingly demanding roles volunteers are required to undertake. The role of the volunteer manager is therefore complex and demanding, one that requires multiple people skills.
This course promotes good practice in the management of volunteers. It centres on the formalisation of the management of volunteers and introduces key components of good practice. It examines how a volunteer manager can put policies and procedures in place to minimise risks to both volunteers and clients. Importance is placed on the clear demarcation of roles undertaken by volunteers and how these relate to the work of paid professionals within the organisation. Issues of volunteer recruitment and retention, screening, selection, training, support and supervision are explored at a practical, organisational level. Students are encouraged to think about the subtleties of volunteer motivation and support. Alongside this, it gives weight to equal opportunities within this context.
