Psychology is the scientific study of human experience, behaviour and the mental processes that determine our actions. This course provides an overview of the subject and considers its five main theoretical perspectives. It also provides an introduction to three topics within the discipline. These have been carefully selected for their potential relevance to those working in the voluntary sector. The topics covered are abnormal psychology, cognitive development and social influence. Abnormal or clinical psychology describes certain psychological disorders and considers the treatments and therapies available. It also asks the question 'What is normal or abnormal behaviour?' The Unit on cognitive development focuses on the work of Jean Piaget and considers how children's thinking develops. The final Unit is concerned with the individual in relation to his/her social environment and the different ways in which we are influenced by other people.
