This module is designed as an introductory course to organisations and management practice. It is a prerequsite for Organisational Change.
Organisations are all around us and we are all involved with them every day of our lives, as customers, employees or suppliers. 'Structures in Organisations' provides a comprehensive overview of how and why different organisations are structured and operate in different, often unique, ways. The course utilises leading theories, models and analysis tools throughout, to provide the student with a greater understanding of the many complex factors that affect the way in which organisations operate. In particular, the course examines and categorises types of internal structures that dictate how an organisation is structured and operates from within. Furthermore, external forces, which govern how any organisation can operate are discussed in depth and the course uses PEST and SWOT analysis tools to help the reader recognise these external forces and use them to the best advantage.
Perhaps the most important part of any organisation is its people or employees. This Module uses Belbin's model of team roles to examine how different people provide different skills and roles within organisations. The concept of leadership is examined in detail including employee and self-motivation as well as dealing with conflicts that may occur within the organisation. The Module is written with direct examples and relevance to voluntary organisations.
