Course Description:

This course guides students through a range of study skills and has been developed to help students to study effectively. For students who have not gained formal qualifications or who have not studied in this way for some time, this module will help to renew confidence in your ability to study. The first unit includes a look at motivation, time management, preparation for study, setting goals, and how to timetable study around work and other commitments. It also considers personal development; how you can get the most from your study, using reflective practice and what you can do to record your learning and development.

Unit Two explores how to use background reading as research material and how to read critically, enabling students to assess and evaluate ideas and theories. It will equip students with the skills needed to address the assignment questions posed in any module studied.

Unit Three helps students to produce written work in an academic style and to develop their writing skills, covering topics such as grammar and punctuation, structuring an essay and the correct way to reference sources of information in their work.

The final Unit concludes the module with a consideration of theory and relating experience to theory. It guides the student through the feedback and other comments they may receive with their marked work, helping them to make constructive use of such feedback. Upon completion students should be able to understand their own individual approach to study and be competently placed to continue with further modules.
