Through this course students will appreciate the pivotal role that education plays in a person's life. As this Module will explore, this is particularly true for children as it shapes their wider life choices and aspirations by colouring not only academic achievement but also the development of personality and social skills and relationships with peers.
As students of this course will understand, a child who has to manage additional difficulties requires an education that properly and fully prepares them for entry into adult life. This course seeks to go beyond an analysis of specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia that has come to epitomise any discussion of learning disabilities in recent years. It examines the importance of ensuring that education for children with learning disabilities is not only effective, but is also positive. It aims to give students an understanding of the nature of learning disabilities in their broadest sense, looking not only at the mechanics of learning disabilities, but also at the fact that children with physical impairments and non-disabled children may experience learning disabilities if education is not sensitive to their needs. It seeks to equip students with an understanding of the strategies and philosophies that need to be considered in order to enable children who are experiencing learning disabilities to thrive within the educational process.
In recognition of the fact that education is ineffective if it does not offer students strategies for later life, it also looks at options for further education and employment.
