Course Description

The course begins by introducing the concepts and definitions of deviance and crime and how these terms can be determined culturally and related to methods of social control. It goes on to broaden its theoretical base, drawing from a range of sociological perspectives, including Marxist and feminist theories. The course continues with an examination of patterns and trends in crime and deviance and how these vary in relation to factors such as gender, ethnicity, social class, age and geographic location.

The role of the media is also examined, and how its portrayal of crime and deviance impacts upon society's view of it and how its patterns of social control operate.

The Module ends by looking at how and why crimes become known (reported) and others remain unknown (unreported) and questions are asked as to why criminal activities, such as 'white collar' and corporate crime, tend to remain hidden from official statistics.
