Course Description:

This course aims to lead students to an understanding of disability, of how the perception and experience of disability has changed over time and explores the many different and complex meanings given to disability.

The course centres upon the differences between impairment vis a vis disability and importantly, the relationship between individual impairments and how these are perceived by society at large. The Module examines how exclusion, disadvantage and disability arises at this interface. This Module then turns to look at how the phenomenon and experience of disability has changed over time, exploring how disability can be understood from a basis of equality and human rights. The distinction is drawn between the 'Medical Model' and 'Social Model' that tend to co-exist in society at any one time.

This course continues by examining the tensions and contradictions whereby the Social Model of Disability is accepted rationale of disability and impairment for many disabled people, while the Medical Model is still accepted by many professional fields.

The course ends by exploring the rise of the Disability Movement from an international perspective and its related organisations (both traditional charity led and organisations run by and for disabled people) and the challenges that may effectively be made to many aspects of discrimination and prejudice.
