Course Description:

Within the voluntary sector, there is increasing emphasis placed on the importance of undertaking research, to examine and create interpretations of its own history and to look at ways of developing service provision in a more client-centred way. This course aims to introduce students to both the theory and practice of research methods. Although the focus is on qualitative methods, it explores the differences and use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. It sets out to explore how knowledge is constructed through documentary research, interviewing techniques, participant observation and questionnaire surveys.

Underlying the introduction of these research methods, this Module encourages students to put into practice certain key skills, namely: critical reading, understanding more widely the construction of knowledge and the importance of context to this, the ability to coherently analyse data and present information from a wide variety of sources. The research methods presented in this Module rely on the student using communication skills dealt with in other areas of the programme and encourages consideration regarding the ethics of undertaking research, in what can often be sensitive situations.
