Course Description

The aim of the dissertation is to produce an original, self-directed piece of work on a clearly defined topic, preferably related to the student's role either as a paid worker or a volunteer, or within the voluntary sector more generally.

Essentially, it is an original piece of research that is undertaken by the student in consultation with the tutor. The student is expected to formulate research objectives, design the research programme, execute 'field' and/or library based work.

The writing up of the results require a student to draw upon and develop a range of practical and academic skills, many of which will be of value in future careers. The dissertation, for example, gives students the opportunity to explore an area of interest that may begin to define their future and/or professional identity. Furthermore, each dissertation will have value in itself and represents a piece of research undertaken within a sector that has traditionally been under-represented within an academic context.

The dissertation represents the most substantive piece of independent work in the undergraduate programme.
