Course Description

The aim of the journal is to enable students to reflect on their progress throughout their Level Three Modules.

In thinking about and writing a journal, students are encouraged to engage in a structured and reflective process which will provide an effective means of charting their personal and educational development as they progress through their programme of study. Keeping a journal allows students to assimilate learning through the evaluation of theories in everyday life and practice, thus ensuring an integrated approach to learning. In addition, wider learning is encouraged through the recording of emotive reactions, ideas, questions, insights, etc.

In a two way process, journal writing provides an on-going medium through which students can explore how their studies are impacting on their personal lives, their approach to volunteering and community issues, and how they view society in the broader context and vice versa. This is because journal-writing encourages an andragogical approach to learning, students therefore value and bring their own experiences to their studies; experiential learning being at the heart of such a process. By such a means, students are encouraged to value learning in a variety of contexts.

Journals also give tutors valuable insights into students' motivation and styles of learning. This is particularly pertinent within a distance learning context where tutor-student contact might be limited. A journal will ensure that tutors are not only better placed to offer appropriate guidance and personal support, they will also be able to 'get to know' students throughout their time of study at Level Three. The journal will provide a means of confirming that the students' work is their own and a much greater insight into the students' progress at this level.
