Course Description:

This course explores some key themes concerning the family, its construction, ideology and its relationship with society and social policy. It examines how social policy and welfare delivery supports particular family forms. It turns to look at how such policies impact upon the individual and more broadly at issues such as child protection.

A broad perspective of welfare delivery to the family is explored from changes that have ensued post Second World War, taking a particular interest in the ideology adopted by the New Right and New Labour. As such ideology spills over into policy development and finally actual provision, close attention is paid to New Labour's 'joined up' approaches to tackling social exclusion and at the level of delivery.

Exploring the differences in welfare delivery between local authority agencies and those provided by the voluntary sector, this Module gives insight into the role of the social worker and to less conventional service delivery, such as agencies providing therapeutic support.

This Module concludes by exploring the changing nature and concepts of childhood, highlighting the need for reconsidering children within social policy at a European level.
