Course Description

This course introduces the student to the main sociological theories pertaining to health and how the theories have developed in historical, political and academic contexts.

Consideration is given to the historical development of the social mores around health in our society. By looking at, for example, sexuality and sexual behaviour, and the use of drugs, the student will be led towards understanding how these 'values' relate to current representation of how we think about our own bodies, the images we present and the repercussions on such issues as dieting and fitness and what is presumed to be 'healthy'.

The Module then turns its attention away from popular representation of health to those seated within the medical profession. The Module highlights the medical profession's control over healthy bodies and minds and provides an understanding of what are highly contentious and emotive areas within health.

To conclude, this Module introduces the historical and cultural development of the health care system in Britain. Discussion of the NHS is introduced, along with an awareness of the inequalities in the system and compares this provision with that of private practice. The student will then gain insight into the sociology of health care, and an appreciation as to how lives are affected by poverty and wealth, ethnicity, gender and age. Students are lead to an empathetic understanding of inequality that will have crosscurrents with their own volunteer or professional roles.
